The morning was good... Dr. Porter and Aaron were doing the rounds today. Dr. Porter came in my room and played with the kids. He came at 10:30 or so, so at 11 we went to take AU to play in the computer lab. Aaron came too so there were a lot of people in that little room. At first Theo did most of the talking... showing the software etc. She left and I then did some games with Alex. The second Theo left he wanted to play the fun game instead of his homework games and it was kind of embarrassing in front of the professors. I said no so instead he would look to Dr. Porter and put on the big eyes and puppy dog face hoping that he would budge. I got him to play his homework games for another 30 minutes and then let him play the music game before we left.I was a bit frustrated with his manipulation but this is how kids are and it shows that AU is an intelligent kid. He did a great job with the other software... with the letters and the counting. Alex absolutely loved the attention and it was a great confidence booster for him. The male attention is good for him too because he primarily gets us woman lovin.
Today at the hospital my babies were gone! Great news for them because it means that they are healthy. I guess that they both have moms but their moms just drop them off at the hospital until they are healthy and then pick them back up. This is a little strange to me but when it reflects the hardship of money. I think that it is because the mothers cannot afford to stay in the hospital nor afford that time away from their homes as this is the time of year that many people are harvesting their crops. Alex was there and he greeted me heartily which was nice. He said that there were 2 kids on the other side of the hospital and brought me to them! I guess that these two girls were sisters and were from our Sec. 2 orphanage. They were in the hospital for surgery on their cleft palates or something to that effect. One girl, Elena was very fussy. I played puppets with her for a while. The other moms and kids in the room were also entertained. It was nice having Alex there because at this point he knows the drill and was able to explain to the mothers why I was there. The mothers were gypsies and the second I pulled out a balloon for Elena, they begged for one too. I gave one to them... not a big deal. One of the nurses came in and played with Elena for a bit because she was screaming like a banshee. Once the girls were fed they were a lot happier. Elena’s sister, Ionella, was 8 months and was in a crib on the other side of the room. I made this little contraption with a balloon and a pipe cleaner so that Ionella could hold onto the balloon in a fun and safe way. She loved it. She just played with that balloon for a good half hour or so. Aaron Rose finally found me (he was observing in the hospital today). He played in my room for 15 minutes or so which was nice because we could juggle the two girls. Turns out that he speaks English, as does Alex. Who would have thought? The ‘coincidences’ that happen in this hospital are unreal. I am blown away each and every day. Alex is such an interesting kid. So as I may have mentioned before, he has a really large growth under his chin and along one side of his neck. It almost looks like bone... like a spine that protrudes under his skin. It was bigger today and it is pulling his skin so much that the skin has cracked and started bleeding. He said he is getting his operation in November... I guess that he is from Italy and came here to have a procedure done on his neck? It is interesting because at least with missionaries or interns... they are flown OUT of Romania to have any serious medical treatment. Everyone here knows Alex, the nurses, the patients, the patients’ parents. He plays with the kids and it is really cool to see the influence that he has. It reflects the lack of confidentiality here also as he can just walk in and out of the rooms; he was showing me the babies medical records which felt so wrong! He really is a little guardian angel here for the patients. It is so cool. Well I am off to bed early tonight because we have our big excursion to the monasteries tomorrow woot woot! Just heading to the G Market to get some treats.. wafers.. popcorn and of course sunflower seeds!
